Sambatek led this MnDOT District 1 GEC final design project to resurface 26 miles of two state highways, which included bridge approach panels, shoulder widening, culvert work, utility coordination, and access closure. This project comprised 11 culvert replacements, 24 culvert linings, and many culvert extensions. This project was unique because the corridor has many wetlands on both sides of the roadway and few practical detour routes to construct the culvert replacements. Sambatek was responsible for full construction plans, utility coordination, permitting, and special provisions for the project.

Since the project schedule needed recovery from the Notice to Proceed, Sambatek introduced the Scope Verification Map to replace the 30 percent plans. Sambatek also used Over-the-Shoulder reviews for complex and unique plan sections to streamline development and formal review periods. Sambatek developed and finalized construction limits and the 30 percent deliverables within the first six weeks. Within 28 weeks, we submitted 95 percent of final plans, specifications, and estimates. The project was a success in recovering the schedule, and project quality with minimal pre-letting comments and almost no consultation during construction, and the low bid came in under the engineer’s estimate.
