Sambatek led the design for this project, which was constructed in 2023. The project replaced pavement throughout downtown Bigfork and reconstructed all sidewalks and driveways. Our team led the state and city on an aggressive alternatives analysis process, including two public hybrid (virtual and in-person) open houses. We evaluated the typical section of the highway, including several iterations that would include new bike facilities. The design team considered both a shared-use path and bike lanes for the highway and solicited feedback from the public on each.

Ultimately, the city favored bike lanes, which moved forward with the project. The project also required detailed sidewalk analysis due to the impacts on all adjacent businesses, many of which do not currently have ADA-compliant access from the state right-of-way. Tracking the tie-in points and other impacts on the buildings and utilities was a challenge and has required diligent tracking of ADA recommendations from the field walk. This work impacts required adjustments to the lighting system, local utilities, and more.
