Sambatek is proud to share that the TH 53 Overlay Project in Eveleth (SP 6918-103) has received a 2026 Concrete Paving Award in the MnDOT Overlay category from the Concrete Paving Association of Minnesota (CPAM).
Delivered in partnership with MnDOT District 1 and a strong team of collaborators, this project highlights the impact of thoughtful design, accelerated delivery, and innovative safety solutions on one of northern Minnesota’s key corridors.
Located between Highway 37 and 1 mile south of Highway 135, the project improved pavement conditions, enhanced safety, and traffic flow near the Rock Ridge School campus. From kickoff to final design, the team advanced the project from 0 to 100 percent in just six months, while maintaining traffic and minimizing disruptions.
Sambatek led the Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE) safety study for three key intersections along TH 53. This effort resulted in forward-thinking solutions that are not commonly used in Minnesota, including a non-signalized Green-T intersection and a modified Reduced Conflict Intersection, both selected by MnDOT to improve long-term safety and operations.
Project highlights include:
- Mill and overlay design to extend pavement life
- Intersection improvements to enhance safety and traffic flow
- Bridge approach panel upgrades
- Guardrail updates and ADA improvements
- Traffic management strategies to minimize disruption during construction
- Accelerated project delivery from 0 to 100 percent design in six months

This award recognizes projects that demonstrate durable, long-lasting concrete pavement solutions that improve safety and performance across Minnesota’s transportation network.
The award was presented at the CPAM Concrete Paving Awards Banquet on March 12, 2026, at Breezy Point Resort.
Sambatek is honored to be part of a team delivering cost-effective, resilient infrastructure that serves communities today and into the future.
