Celebrating Our Interns on National Intern Day
National Intern Day is a chance to recognize the students who have spent their summer learning, contributing, and gaining hands-on experience at Sambatek.
This summer, our interns worked alongside teams across the company, supported real projects, learned new programs, and saw how different disciplines work together. We asked several interns to share their favorite part of the experience, something that surprised them, and their advice for future interns.
Patrick Albers
Patrick’s favorite part of his internship has been learning how transportation projects move through the planning and design process.
He was surprised by how much analysis goes into selecting the best design or interchange for a specific location. From reviewing different options to considering the needs of the surrounding area, each decision requires careful thought.
Patrick’s advice for future interns is to stay organized and take notes throughout the experience.
Mateus Cullen
Mateus has enjoyed that each day brings something new. No two projects are the same, giving him the chance to strengthen skills he already had while continuing to learn new concepts.
His work in water resources showed him how many details and moving parts are involved in a project. He was also surprised by how closely water resources connect to civil infrastructure and community planning.
Mateus encourages future interns to ask questions, even when the topic feels familiar. There is always more to learn, and staying curious is an important part of growing professionally.
Thomas Sauer
Thomas’s favorite part of his internship has been learning programs used by Sambatek teams, including OpenRoads Designer, HydroCAD, and HY-8. He has also strengthened his skills in Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
One of his biggest takeaways has been seeing how complex projects can be and how closely every detail is reviewed.
His advice to future interns is to ask plenty of questions and take the time to get to know their coworkers.
Jack Leone
Jack appreciated Sambatek’s welcoming and friendly workplace. He shared that it is clear that people care about their work and enjoy being part of the team.
He was also surprised by how collaborative projects are. Throughout his internship, Jack has worked alongside people in positions and disciplines he did not initially expect to work with.
His advice for future interns is to ask questions. Team members are ready to help, and asking questions is one of the best ways to learn.
Growing Together
Although each intern had a different experience, one message was consistent: ask questions, stay curious, and learn from the people around you.
